The transport sector in Germany will have to change fundamentally in the coming years in order to achieve the set emission and environmental targets, particularly the goal of climate neutrality by 2045. The Pilot-SBG project at the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum aims to use biogenic by-products and residual and waste materials to produce renewable methane. The methane will be used as a fuel in the transport sector, making an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The pilot plant constructed as part of the project combines the continuous processes of anaerobic digestion with innovative pretreatment and upgrading processes to provide renewable methane as an energy source or fuel. This article investigated the potential contribution of biogenic municipal waste as a feedstock for biomethane production. Extracts from the project show a regional potential analysis as well as a concept for efficient feedstock utilization by increasing the methane yield via hydrothermal carbonization and the integration of green hydrogen via methanation. The technoeconomic evaluation of the concept will be supported by process simulations. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.
